Owned and operated by wife and husband team Buffy Illingworth and Greg Kuepfer, Edison’s is truly a labour of love. Buffy runs the back of house and is the chef, baker and server. Greg runs the front of house and is also the barista and server. Working together, the two of them have created both a family business and a well-oiled machine.

The Scene

Edison’s Cafe Bar is a beautiful little gem nestled into the main street of Stratford. Renowned inventor Thomas Edison once lived upstairs, and much of the building’s period charm has been retained. A black and white colour scheme with touches of warm wood tones is balanced by the coolness of an exposed brick wall. Chic and sophisticated meets cozy and comfortable. Owners Greg and Buffy each have a long food history, but Buffy’s background in design and holistic nutrition inspired the café. “We live a very holistic lifestyle and wanted the cafe to reflect that,” says Buffy. They have three beautiful children — Roma, Charlie and Thomas — who are integral to shaping their family-run business. “We keep hours that reflect a well-balanced work week and allow us to be home for dinner with them every night,” adds Buffy. “A true recipe for success.”

Menu Highlights

The select and unique breakfast and lunch menu is focused on whole foods and clean eating, and is mostly plant-based. The signature “toasts” — served openface on sprouted multigrain or gluten-free chia bread — have created quite a local buzz. Most popular is the Avocado Toast, with organic greens, tomato, radish, pickled onion, pine nuts, fresh herbs, topped with a perfectly poached egg. Also recommended: Wild Mushroom Toast with sheep ricotta, organic greens, fresh herbs, tomato, pine nuts, EVOO and balsamic glaze; and the Lemon-Tahini Hummus Toast with crushed olives & peppers, toasted pine nuts, basil oil, organic greens, tomato and feta.
All baked goods are prepared lovingly in-house, without the use of grains, dairy or refined sugars, and are naturally sweetened. A wide assortment are gluten-free and many include “superfood” ingredients.
Outstanding coffee (of course!) shares the stage with local beer, wine and unique beverages such as beet, turmeric, moringa and charcoal lattes. They also offer a lovely selection of nourishing teas and cold pressed organic juices from local businesses.
