SCHATZ WINERY: Savour the Schatz Wein Experience

Written by Local Flavour

In an idyllic location halfway between Grand Bend and Bayfield, steps from the Lake Huron shore, Schatz Winery is one of the latest developments at the esteemed Hessenland Inn. “Schatz” is a German term of endearment and a nod to the proud heritage that infuses every aspect of the Hessenland experience. The “weins” — and the winery itself — are a reflection of a love of the land and of family.

The Scene

The iconic Hessenland tower — featured on the Schatz Winery logo — offers a panoramic viewing deck and winding tower staircase for the perfect vantage point to take in breathtaking views of the vineyard, gardens and venue spaces below, all within a short walk to the Lake Huron shoreline. Hessenland Inn (see a full profile on pages 88–89) offers Feast ON™-certified cuisine, accommodations and amenities that reflect traditional German heritage with a modern touch. Lovers of the grape will appreciate the new Winery Boutique and winery tours and tastings, with the option of lunch or dinner in the restaurant or vineyard.

Wine Highlights

While the inspiration for a vineyard at Hessenland bloomed many moons ago when Frank and Liz Ihrig spent a semester in the south of France, the blue clay soil in St. Joseph and the unique offerings of the Lake Huron breeze have shaped the terroir for Schatz Winery.
Learning from their neighbours and mentors from across Niagara, Prince Edward County and Huron Shores wine regions, the Ihrigs, with family and friends, hand planted a five-acre micro-vineyard in 2015. Going relatively small with hybrid vines that are resilient and healthy in this agriculturally rich farm land captures the Schatz Winery mantra — “quality over quantity” — and the results have been gratifying. Implementing time-honoured traditions in conjunction with innovations, they carried out their first harvest in 2017 and now offer a growing lineup of Schatz vintages.

Each wine is named to tie into the history of Hessenland and the surrounding area or after family members. The popular Schatz house wines are simply St. Joe’s White and St. Joe’s Red.

Schatz Winery recently welcomed Brandon Chaffe to their leadership team, as Winery Manager, and look forward to further growth.
