THE RIVER ROOM: Café & Private Dining — RHINO LOUNGE: Bakery & Coffee Shoppe

Written by The Editors

Owners Jess Jazey-Spoelstra and Harmen Spoelstra opened The River Room and put Museum London on the local dining map. This exceptional lunch and brunch spot reflects Jess’ culinary philosophy “to create exceptional food at reasonable prices,” with lots of New York-style bravado. Since 2014, the stylish Rhino Lounge Bakery & Coffee Shoppe has been know for its sleek ambience, creative menu, specialty coffees and outstanding baked goods.

The Scene

Chef Jeff Fortner

The River Room offers outstanding food and service in a stunning space with fabulous views of the The Forks of the Thames and the old courthouse. Jess Jazey-Spoelstra’s sophisticated design sensibility is reflected in the cuisine as well as the stylish and relaxed interior. The ambience is warm and friendly, with glass, leather and linen textural elements. There is an attractive curved bar at the entrance and photos pay homage to New York City.

Menu Highlights

At lunch, Chef Jeff Fortner and his team’s features include Pan Roasted Salmon with miso-honey sauce, soba noodles, scallion, julienned carrot and tomato. The East Coast Lobster Roll with celery, scallion, mayo and topsider bun quickly became a signature dish. House Cured Smoked Trout with toasted naan, house crackers, crème fraîche and accoutrements.

Pastry Chef Michele Lenhardt

Über Pastry Chef Michele Lenhardt brings dessert offerings at both locations to a new level. Decadent Chocolate Cake with fudge frosting and Carrot Cake with cream cheese icing are classics, as are her Apple Fritters with salted caramel sauce. Try the River Room’s signature Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée and the Rhino’s Brookies (brownie meets cookie) and the popular Cronut Thursdays. The Rhino caters to different diets, and has developed vegan takes on such classics as Mac ’n’ Cheese, Sausage Rolls, Cheesecake and Dutchies.

The River Room’s prix fixe Brunch menu ($28) features a dozen dishes, including:

Cobb Salad with grilled chicken, bacon, blue cheese, hard-boiled egg and chopped tomato & cucumbers.

Oeufs en Meurette — two soft poached eggs in red wine sauce with Cipollini onions, bacon lardons and roasted potatoes.

Maitake & Potato Skillet, with boudin blanc, leek, zucchini, fried egg and toast.
